Club Treasures: Friendly Cup

The Friendly Cup is contested whenever Sunderland and Norwich City meet.

It stems from the 1985 Milk (League) Cup final. That match came at a time when crowd trouble was at its worst. Indeed, in the second leg of the semi-final one of Sunderland’s goals was scored while a police horse was on the pitch! Really.

However, at Wembley where Norwich won 1-0 the red and white army showed their class by staying to congratulate the Canaries and their flock of supporters with scarves swapped and handshakes exchanged outside the ground.

In recognition of the sporting behaviour of the fans, a garage in Norwich donated a trophy. This was contested for over 30 years until it was replaced by this modern version to continue the relationship between the clubs.

In 1992, when Sunderland beat Norwich in the FA Cup semi-final the Norwich fans were every bit as magnanimous in defeat as the Black Cats had been at Wembley.
