Club Treasures: Vancouver Totem Pole

In 1967, Sunderland’s entire first-team squad spent the summer playing in Canada and the USA, representing Vancouver as the Vancouver Royal Canadians in an attempt to get soccer played in North America.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City also took part, as did teams from Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Holland and Brazil.

In total, the ‘Vancouver Royal Canadians’ played 12 games and this model of a totem pole was presented to the Black Cats by the Canadian city for representing them.
