Sunderland’s Player of the Century, Charlie Hurley, won 38 of his 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland while he was on Sunderland’s books.
This one is from a match against Spain in 1964-65, the season after ‘King’ Charlie had captained Sunderland to a first-ever promotion.
Hurley helped his country to keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win in a World Cup qualifying match in Dublin on 5 May 1965 – eight years to the day before Sunderland won the FA Cup.
