Club Treasures: Jackie Mordue England cap

Jackie Mordue was a member of Sunderland’s great side of 1912-13 which won the league and reached the FA Cup final.

A native of County Durham, he played for Barnsley and Woolwich Arsenal before signing for Sunderland in 1908 and scoring in the legendary 9-1 win over Newcastle shortly after.

A right winger, Mordue played until 1920, making almost 300 appearances – a figure that would have been much higher but for the seasons lost to World War One.

On loan courtesy of Margaret Pearson, this is one of his two England caps. In 1912 and 1913 he played against Ireland, and on the second occasion he was joined by the other members of the famed ‘Roker Triangle’ – Francis Cuggy and Charlie Buchan.
