This season ticket is so old it is from before Sunderland even joined the Football League.
Dating from 1888-89 when Sunderland played at Newcastle Road, the membership card is number 685 and lists Samuel Tyzack as the club’s treasurer and W.T. Wallace as secretary.
Although Sunderland weren’t yet in the league they did play in the FA Cup, beating Elswick Rangers and Newcastle East End before withdrawing from the competition, rather than face rivals Sunderland Albion who they had been drawn against.
