Fred Dale: 4 November 1904 - 31 January 1905

The highlight of interim boss Fred Dale’s reign was his victory over rivals Newcastle United.

Dale inspired a 3-1 victory over his north east counterparts which was later followed up by an impressive 1-0 victory over Everton.

Born in 1864, Dale featured for Sunderland as a player in the pre-league days, making his debut against Wearmouth in April 1985.

Having joined the club from Monkwearmouth Working Men's Hall, he then appeared in Sunderland's second ever FA Cup tie in the following October and was captain of the side in the 1887-88 season.
