Gus Poyet: 8 October 2013 - 16 March 2015

Like Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet’s second game in charge saw him defeat local rivals Newcastle United after a disappointing first game at the helm.

He went on to lead Sunderland to the League Cup Final in his first season, defeating Manchester United and Chelsea en route to Wembley.

Poyet was also the manager responsible for halting Jose Mourinho’s undefeated run at Stamford Bridge as he oversaw an incredible escape from relegation, with Sunderland picking up 7 points from a possible 9 away to Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea during April and May.

The Black Cats eventually finished 13th.

He departed after a tough run in March 2015 with the club one point clear of the relegation zone.
