Ricky Sbragia: 4 December 2008 - 24 May 2009
Like Malcolm Crosby before him, Ricky Sbragia was part of the York City team that flourished under Denis Smith in the 1980s.
Having been a youth team and reserve coach at Sunderland between 1994 and 2002, he returned to the Stadium of Light in November 2007.
He somewhat reluctantly took the reins after Keane’s sudden departure, but successfully steered the team away from relegation. The club finished with just 36 points but avoided relegation at the expense of Newcastle United.
The following summer, Niall Quinn offered Sbragia a ‘job for life’ and he became chief scout, a role he retained until April 2011.
