Kevin Ball: 6 March 2006 - 9 May 2006 & 22 September 2013 - 8 October 2013
Widely recognised as one of the club’s greatest ever captains, Kevin Ball returned to the Stadium of Light in February 2003 as a coach before becoming assistant academy manager.
He was then appointed caretaker manager for the remaining 10 games of the 2005-06 season, and recorded Sunderland’s only home win of the campaign.
Having been promoted to senior professional development coach in July 2012 by Martin O’Neill, Bally found himself in caretaker charge of Sunderland for the second time. He oversaw just three games, the first of which was a League Cup victory over Peterborough United.
