Terry Butcher: 5 February 1993 - 26 November 1993
Terry Butcher had arrived at Roker Park just six months previously as a player, having been dismissed as player-manager at Coventry following his refusal to take a pay-cut.
After Dave Bassett and Steve Coppell had declined the job, Butcher became Sunderland’s first ever player-manager missing only one of the remaining fixtures that season. Results failed to improve however, and Sunderland relied on results elsewhere to survive after a final-day loss to Notts County.
Butcher was given an unprecedented transfer kitty of over £2 million to spend in the summer, but failed to see his new signings fulfill their potential. He was sacked just three months into the 1993-94 season, six days after a 2-0 home defeat to Southend United.
