THE MANAGERS: David Merrington

David Merrington: 25 October 1978 - 11 December 1978

Following the departure of James Adamson to Leeds United, David Merrington took temporary charge of Sunderland between October and December 1978.

During Merrington’s short time at the helm he secured the club’s best winning margin of the 1978-79 campaign, winning 5-0 over Bristol Rovers.

However, the Chester-le-Street-born manager declined the offer to take the job on a full-time basis and shortly after the club appointed Billy Elliott for his second spell as caretaker boss.
