THE MANAGERS: Ian McColl

John Miller McColl: 21 May 1965 - 8 February 1968

As Sunderland looked to gain some consistency at the helm, Ian McColl was brought in as the man to oversee first-team duties.

Prior to joining Sunderland, McColl was Scotland’s manager which meant he came from a sought-after background.

Despite receiving substantial financial backing, McColl was unable to lift the team beyond the lower reaches of the First Division.

In McColl’s two full seasons in charge he recorded a 19th and 17th place finishes before he was later relieved of his duties midway through the following campaign.

Alan Brown then returned to the club for his second spell in charge of the club to replace the departed McColl.
