George Hardwick: 14 November 1964 - 1 May 1965
George Hardwick’s appointment saw him become the tenth manager in Sunderland’s history to take charge of the first team.
Following Alan Brown’s resignation in July 1964, the Black Cats didn’t appointment another manager until November when Hardwick came in for the rest of the campaign.
Hardwick took over at a time when the club was precariously placed at third bottom, but buoyed by their impressive home form and the consistent goal scoring of Nick Sharkey, Hardwick led the club to safety as they secured a mid-table berth.
However, despite keeping the club up Hardwick left Sunderland before later taking up the manager’s role at Gateshead in 1968.
