Brooke Chaplen scored a brace as Sunderland Ladies progressed to the sixth round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup against Yeovil Town at Huish Park.
The midfielder fired the Lasses ahead midway through the second half from close range before adding a second with 11 minutes left.
Beth Mead and Rachel Furness also went close for the Lady Black Cats while Yeovil rarely threatened Rachel Laws’ goal.
With new FAWSL1 season just one week away, Sunderland Ladies faced a mammoth trip to Somerset to play their first competitive fixture since October 2015.
And with spirits high in the camp that an FA Cup quarter-final place was up for grabs, the Lady Black Cats travelled to Yeovil Town in a buoyant mood.
Sunderland started the brighter as Mead forced Charlotte Haynes into action with a powerful drive from 18 yards out after 17 minutes.
Moments later Mead showed good strength as she held off the challenge from Yeovil’s defence before finding a supportive run from Furness.
The midfielder showed great desire to support Mead, however her effort lacked any power and it bobbled wide from the edge of the box.
Yeovil grew into the game and looked to profit from Sunderland’s missed opportunities but rarely created in the opening half as the scores remained level after 45 minutes.
With little to separate the teams, the game was crying out for a goal and Chaplen provided just that when she tapped home – after seeing her initial effort saved – in the 67th minute.
It was nothing more than Sunderland deserved after they had created a host of opportunities as well as dominated proceedings in the opening 45.
Yeovil responded brightly but Chaplen doubled the Lasses' advantage with just over 10 minutes to play as she finished off a neat move from Mead.
The forward turned well in the box before firing a driven ball across the face of goal - Chaplen slid in and the ball flicked in off the post and into the net.
The hosts piled forward late on as they looked to find a way back into the tie but the Lady Black Cats held out for a hard fought victory in Somerset to progress to the quarter-finals of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
