Under-16s finish seventh in Future Champions Cup.

Sunderland’s U16 side rounded off their Future Champions Cup campaign with a win over Qatari side Aspire Academy in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Andrew Nelson and Charlie Wigley netted as a young Sunderland outfit secured a seventh-place finish in the 16-team tournament.

Nelson fired the Black Cats into the lead when he profited from good work from Elliot Embleton to find the back of the net.

A defensive mix-up then lead to an Aspire equaliser, but Sunderland weren’t to be denied as Wigley squeezed in a shot from a tight angle for the winner.

Coach Elliott Dickman told safc.com: “We played well in spells but were sloppy in possession at times.

“It was a tight game and we finished strongly in terms of trying to keep the ball and slow the game down.

“The tournament has been first class and we have been very well looked after.

“We have been really pleased with the players – they should receive credit for how they have represented their families and the club.”
