Youngsters draw with US side.
Sunderland’s U16s finished second in Group D of the Future Champions Cup with a 1-1 draw against American side USYSA Select.
The young Black Cats, who confirmed their place as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns, conceded an early goal only to come back and claim a share of the spoils.
Sunderland found themselves a goal down after only 32 seconds but quickly recovered their composure with Luke Molyneux, Andrew Nelson and Dan Pybus all seeing efforts saved.
Going in 1-0 down at half-time, Sunderland made a super start to the second half by levelling the scores within 45 seconds of the restart.
Josh Robson and Elliot Embleton combined well to release Nelson, who finished well.
Molyneux and Nelson both came close in the final stages, but Sunderland just couldn’t find a second goal.
Sunderland will now go on to play two play-off games to determine their final position, with the first against Zambian side K-Stars on Friday (KO 1345 local time).
Coach Elliott Dickman said: “Overall it was a good game and we were very pleased with how we performed.
“We passed the ball better, broke well and got more shots on goal without being able to score that second goal.”
