Club ambassador due at special event in Johannesburg.
Sunderland AFC ambassador Jimmy Montgomery will attend a special screening of a new movie chronicling the life story of Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg tonight.
Dramatising Mandela’s childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa, the critically acclaimed film, based on the 1994 biography ‘Long Walk to Freedom’, is set to open in cinemas across the world in January 2014.
As part of Sunderland AFC’s unique partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, an exclusive screening of the film starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, will take place in Sunderland – further details will be announced in due course.
Jimmy joined SAFC’s CEO Margaret Byrne and commercial director, Gary Hutchinson, at the opening of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre of Memory in Johannesburg yesterday.
Speaking about the event and tonight’s screening, he said: “It was an incredibly moving and humbling experience to be part of such a historic occasion. We got to witness first-hand how the club’s ground-breaking partnership is truly making a difference and experience the warmth and goodwill there is towards Sunderland in Africa.
“To be invited to represent the club at tonight’s screening is another great honour for me and I’m very much looking forward to attending.”
