South Africans head to Wearside.

Earlier this year a group of delegates from Sunderland AFC led the way in the first ever Barclays Premier League Live event, which saw over 30,000 fans visit Zoo Lakes Park in Johannesburg.

The free-to-enter park was a huge success and offered African fans the chance to engage with some of the top Barclays Premier League clubs including SAFC. A number of exciting and interactive challenges and competitions took place at the fan park, including the opportunity for one lucky fan to win a VIP trip to the Stadium of Light.

The competition which was based on a member of the public guessing the amount of faces in a crowd picture was obviously popular and received a number of entries.

Guida Canada, the lucky winner from the competition was recently announced by Sunderland AFC legend Jimmy Montgomery at the club’s training facility, the Academy of Light.

Guida has won as part of the prize, return flights from Johannesburg to Sunderland courtesy of South African Airways plus four night accommodation and VIP hospitality to a game of her choice.

Following the announcement, Guida and her family met with Emeka Enyadike, Africa Football Manager for who assisted Sunderland AFC during their visit to South Africa.

Guida said: “I almost died of a heart attack when I found out I had won. I was shaking when Emeka called me to ask if I could come to SuperSport’s studios for a photo and interview, it’s not something that happens every day.”

“My family and I would like to thank Sunderland for this unbelievable opportunity and Emeka who has been amazing with all his support. We look forward to visiting the Stadium of Light and cheering on Sunderland next season.”

SAFC has established itself as one of the most recognised and respected Barclays Premier League clubs across Africa and through its many partnerships, relationships and grass root activities, African fans can truly see the impact SAFC is having on many people’s lives.

SAFC commercial director, Gary Hutchinson said: “We look forward to welcoming Guida and her guest to the Stadium of Light next season. Barclays Premier League Live was a great event and we were honoured to have played a part in the fan park initiative.

“The club has a huge following in Africa and it was great to meet and interact with so many of our supporters. It will be great to offer Guida an insight into our football club and we hope she enjoys her stay with us.”
