George, who hails from Prudhoe in Northumberland, is very highly rated and has been with the Academy since he was ten years old.
An attacking player who can be deployed anywhere across midfield George broke into the under-18’s towards the end of the 2010-11 season, ending the campaign with a total of eight appearances.
He played 21 games at youth level in 2011-12, scoring once, and also made an impressive start to life in the development squad, appearing five times.
Honeyman continued his progress during the 2012-13 campaign as he scored six goals in 20 games for the under-18’s including a fine game as the young Black Cats narrowly lost out 4-3 to Fulham in the semi-finals of the Barclays U18 Premier League.
The midfielder made 17 appearances for the club’s U21s during the 2013-14 season followed by 15 in the 2014/15 campaign, during which he also scored three goals in the league.
The 2014-15 season also saw Honeyman make his first-team debut against Bradford City in the FA Cup, and an impressive cameo also saw him named on the bench for the Barclays Premier League trip to Stoke City.
