Sunderland Association Football Club Current Players
Will swapped the south coast for the north east in August 2014, joining Sunderland from Brighton & Hove Albion on a three-year deal.
His move saw him become the second player to move from Brighton following Liam Bridcutt’s arrival in January 2014, reuniting with former boss Gus Poyet.
Buckley started his career with Rochdale, making his debut in 2008 in a 4-2 defeat to Hereford United.
He featured at Wembley at the end of his breakthrough campaign, but he was unable to help Rochdale to promotion as Southport clinched a 3-2 play-off final win.
His first professional goal came in a 2-2 away draw against Rotherham United, and his consistently positive performances led to a move to Watford in January 2010.
Buckley made his Hornets debut on 21st March 2010 in a 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City, scoring his first goal 13-days later in a 1-1 draw against Preston North End.
On June 6th 2011 Buckley was signed by Gus Poyet, joining Brighton who reportedly smashed their record transfer fee with a £1m deal.
He scored his first and second Brighton goals in a dramatic 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers, with his winning goal coming eight minutes into stoppage time to give Brighton their first win at the Amex Stadium.
Buckley was then a regular in Brighton’s team, notching 34 appearances and three goals in the 2013-14 season as the Seagulls were beaten by Derby County in the play-off semi-finals.
