Santiago Vergini made no secret of the fact that he was buzzing to be back on Wearside after returning to Sunderland on a season-long loan deal in August 2014.
The Argentinian defender, who has been capped once by the 2014 World Cup finalists, returned to the Stadium of Light for a second spell having spent the latter stages of the 2013-14 season on loan with the Black Cats.
Vergini, 26, made 14 appearances during the 2013-14 campaign, and added further versatility to Gus Poyet’s backline following the signings of Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt.
In total he made 37 appearances in all competitions during the 2014-15 season.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, Santiago has been capped three times by his country and began his career in Paraguay with Olimpia.
He had a spell in Europe with Italian side Verona before moving back to Rosario to join Newell's Old Boys in 2011, making a total of 78 league appearances for the club.
Santiago joined Estudiantes in 2013 and played 13 league games before opting to move back to Europe with Sunderland.
Vergini joined Spanish side Getafe in July 2015 on a season-long loan.
