Phil is a big-hearted Sunderland stalwart having played for the club since January 2008.
He’s not afraid of putting in the big challenges and has become a valuable member of the team, able to slot in on either side of the centre-backs.
He has also established a reputation for being handy in front of goal, packing a booming shot which he often uses to good effect outside the box.
Phil grew up as a Manchester United fan and fulfilled a childhood dream when he was taken on by the Red Devils.
While on the books at Old Trafford, he spent time on loan with Royal Antwerp, Rangers, Burnley, Aston Villa and Sheffield United – playing under Martin O’Neill while at Villa.
He made eight senior appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in all.
Sunderland bought Phil for £2m in January 2008 and he has featured regularly ever since, ending the 2011-12 season just four games short of 150 for the club in all competitions.
Phil won the club’s player of the season award in 2010-11, signing a new three-and-a-half-year contract during the same year.
Although born and bred in Salford, Phil qualifies for Scotland through his father and has served well since making his international debut against world championship Spain in October 2010.
