Patrick joined Sunderland in July 2014, swapping Chelsea blue for red and white ahead of the 2014-15 Barclays Premier League season.
The Dutch defender began his career with FC Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven, before moving to Chelsea’s academy in 2007.
In 2009 he joined Coventry City on loan, making his professional debut in a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town.
He made his Blues debut on 24th March 2010, replacing Yuri Zhirkov in a 5-0 away win over Portsmouth, before making his home debut six months later in a 7-1 win over Aston Villa.
The defender scored his first professional goal in Chelsea’s 4-3 defeat to former club Newcastle United on 22nd September 2010.
On 17th January 2012, following loan spells with Newcastle United, Leicester City and Wigan Athletic, van Aanholt joined Dutch side Vitesse on loan.
His time at the GelreDome was extended ahead of the 2013-14 season, and he made his first start of the campaign in a UEFA Europa League match against Petrolul Pioiesti.
Van Aanholt also has experience on the international stage, making a host of appearances at youth level for the Netherlands.
He also has two senior caps to his name, making his debut against Colombia before featuring for a second time against Ecuador.
On 25th July 2014 van Aanholt joined Sunderland AFC on a four-year contract and he made an immediate impression on Wearside.
The exciting left-back became quickly renowned for his ability to turn defence into attack and, although he missed two months due to a shoulder injury, he made a total 33 appearances in all competitions scoring one goal in the FA Cup against Leeds United.
