Midfielder Liam became Sunderland's fifth signing of the January 2014 transfer window when he completed a move from Brighton on deadline day.

Bridcutt signed a three-and-a-half-year contract on Wearside, with Sunderland paying the Seagulls an undisclosed fee for his services.

A former Chelsea trainee, Liam cut his teeth with loan spells at Yeovil, Watford and Stockport, making a combined 37 appearances.

Gus Poyet brought the tough-tackling midfielder to Brighton on a permanent basis in August 2010 and the Reading-born star was soon established in the first team, winning promotion to the Championship at the end of his first season.

Liam bagged the Seagulls’ Player of the Season award in both 2012 and 2013, making 151 appearances for the club overall and scoring two goals.

He qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather and made his international debut against Serbia in March 2013.

Bridcutt made his Sunderland debut in the Tyne-Wear derby on 1st February 2014 and it will live long in the memory for the midfielder, as the Black Cats secured a comprehensive 3-0 win.

The midfielder continued his progression on Wearside making 24 appearances in all competitions during the 2014-15 season. 

Bridcutt subsequently made a loan move to Leeds United in November 2015.
