Emanuele swapped Serie A for the Barclays Premier League when he joined Sunderland from Juventus in July 2013.
The attack-minded midfielder, who can play down the middle or on either wing, signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
Emanuele was born in Bibbiena, Italy, and came through the youth system at Cesena.
He had loan spells at Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia before coming a regular with his parent club, for whom he scored 20 goals in 97 league appearances.
He moved to Juventus in August 2011 and enjoyed considerable success, winning the Serie A title in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 campaigns.
The midfielder represented Juve in the Champions League and also won the Supercoppa Italia whilst with the club.
Sunderland pulled off a coup when Emanuele agreed to move to the Stadium of Light ahead of the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season.
Internationally, Emanuele has become a regular for the country of his birth and represented Italy at Euro 2012 as the Azzurri reached the final before being defeated by Spain.
He also starred at the 2013 Confederations Cup just before moving to Wearside.
Giaccherini made his Sunderland debut on 17th August 2013 in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham, scoring his first goal one week later in a 1-1 draw with Southampton.
His first cup goal came in a Capital One Cup win over Peterborough United, which was followed by goals against Liverpool and Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League.
He appeared as a substitute in the 3-1 Capital One Cup final loss against Manchester City at Wembley, notching two assists in a 2-2 draw when the sides met again in April 2014.
His fifth and final goal of the season came against Cardiff City, as the Black Cats secured a 4-0 win.
After a dazzling pre-season the stage was set for Giaccherini to make the 2014-15 season his own, but injuries restricted the Italian to just 12 appearances in all competitions for club and country.
However, the midfielder returned to action on the final day at Stamford Bridge and is hoping to make a big impact during the upcoming campaign.
