Sunderland Association Football Club Current Players
Duncan Watmore joined Sunderland in the summer of 2013 from Conference North side Altrincham.
Fighting off interest from several other clubs, the Black Cats secured the signature of the former Manchester United youth player.
The striker joined Altrincham aged 15 and went on to make 29 appearances, scoring 14 goals, during the 2012-13 season.
Duncan earned the Robins' player of the year award and goal of the season in the process of helping his side to the first round of the FA Cup with Budweiser.
Duncan, whose father Ian is a former chief executive of the Football Association, is also studying for a degree in finance and economics.
He made his senior debut as a second-half substitute during the 3-1 win over Carlisle United in January 2014.
On 31st January 2014 Duncan joined SPL side Hibernian on loan, scoring his first goal in a 3-1 defeat to Partick Thistle.
Duncan began the 2014-15 season with the club’s U21s, providing an attacking focal point in central and wide positions, scoring his first goal in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
And despite missing three months due to a broken leg he managed to score 11 goals in 19 games which saw him named as the Barclays U21 Premier League Player of the Season.
International recognition quickly followed and he played a key role for England's U20s at the Toulon Tournament, scoring two goals and registering two assists in four games.
Duncan's progress continued with a goal on his league debut against Norwich City, followed by another in the Capital One Cup versus Exeter.
On the same day, the winger won his first call-up to the England U21 squad.
He signed a new long-term contract in November 2015, just before graduating with a first in Economics and Business from Newcastle University.
