Costel Pantilimon

Costel officially joined Sunderland on a free transfer in July 2014 after his contract at Manchester City expired.

The goalkeeper began his career with Aerostar Bacau before moving to Politehnica Timisoara in February 2006.

Despite being just 22 years old, Pantilimon captained the club during a match against Ceahlaul in October 2009.

He was also part of the Timisoara side who defeated UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk in the qualifying rounds of the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League, completing the full 90 minutes in both games.

In 2011 Pantilimon joined Manchester City on a one-year loan deal, making his debut in a League Cup win over holders Birmingham City in September 2011.

His standout performance of the season came in a 1-0 League Cup quarter-final win over Arsenal where he was named man of the match following a string of superb saves.

Pantilimon’s loan deal was made permanent soon after and he went on to play a pivotal role in the club’s journey to the 2013 FA Cup final, keeping four clean sheets in five games.

During the 2013-14 season the Romanian made 18 appearances as Manchester City picked up their second Barclays Premier League title in three years.

Standing at 6'8", the goalkeeper also has a wealth of experience at international level, featuring 18 times for the Romanian national team.
