Carlos had the honour of becoming Martin O'Neill's first permanent signing as Sunderland manager when he joined on a free transfer in July 2012.
The pair had previously worked together at Aston Villa and were reunited when Carlos arrived at the Stadium of Light in July 2012, signing a two-year deal.
Standing at 6'3", the classy defender is comfortable on the ball and boasts a vast range of experience.
Born in Madrid, Spain, Carlos showed his promise at regional level in his homeland as a youngster.
The talented defender quickly rose through the divisions, signing for CD Numancia after starring for CD Calahorra in northern Spain.
After two seasons, Carlos joined Osasuna, where his career really took off.
Playing under Javier Aguirre, Osasuna reached the final of the Copa del Rey in 2005 and qualified for the Champions League the following year.
Carlos moved on to join Rangers for around £2.3m in July 2007, spending one season with the Scottish club.
He won a cup double at Ibrox, setting a club record for appearances during a single campaign with 65 in all competitions.
The SPL Player of the Year award was a fine prize at the end a season to remember, which also featured an appearance in the final of the UEFA Cup.
Enter O'Neill – then at Villa - who paid Rangers around £7.8m to sign the defender on a four-year contract in summer 2008.
He was an immensely popular figure with the Villa fans, earning the nickname 'King Carlos'.
The Villa Park faithful even held a special 'King Carlos Day' to mark the last of Cuellar's 123 appearances for the club.
After leaving the club on a free transfer, Carlos attracted interest from across Europe but opted to rejoin O'Neill in the north east.
