Alfred joined Sunderland from Bursaspor in January 2013.

The physical midfielder began his career with US Vandœuvre before signing a professional contract with Association Sportive Nancy-Lorraine in 2004. He didn’t make his debut until the 2007–08 season in the Coupe de la Ligue, at the age of 17.

However, it wasn’t until the following season when the midfielder made his mark in the first team and made 27 senior appearances.

In the summer of 2011, Alfred moved to Bursaspor, for a fee believed to be around £3m.

Over two seasons with the Turkish club he amassed 37 appearances and notched three goals.

Alfred has represented France at all age levels and was vice captain of the under-19  team that reached the semi-final of the 2009 UEFA European Championships.

The midfielder returned to Turkey in July 2013, joining Eskisehirspor on loan. He made 16 appearances for the club before agreeing another loan move to Spanish outfit Real Betis in January 2014.

He played 20 games for Betis before returning to Wearside at the end of the season.
