Argentinian international Marcos Angeleri signed a three-year contract with Sunderland when he joined from Estudiantes in July 2010.
However, the right-back found senior football hard to come by during his first season on Wearside, making just three appearances.
Angeleri - capped on numerous occasions by his country - made almost 200 appearances for Estudiantes and won the Argentine Primera Division in 2006-07.
Angeleri followed up that success by helping Estudiantes to win the Copa Libertadores - South America's equivalent of the Champions' League - in 2008-09.
He finished in the top ten of voting for the 2008 South American Footballer of the Year Award and was an extremely popular figure with the Estudiantes fans.
Angeleri's childhood nickname was cascarita ('eggshell') while he was known variously as gordo ('fat guy') and cobra during his time with the Argentinian club.
The defender made his senior debut for Sunderland as a substitute against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day 2010.
