Lorik Cana was Steve Bruce's third signing in the summer of 2009.
The highly-rated midfielder moved to the Stadium of Light from Olympique de Marseille on a 4-year contract in a deal worth over £5million.
Cana, 25, brings with him a tremendous amount of experience both at club level and internationally.
After beginning his career at FC Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland, he enjoyed a successful spell with Paris St-Germain before moving to the Stade Velodrome as club captain in August 2005.
Cana led Marseille to a second place finish in Ligue 1 in the 2008-09 season - just three points short of champions Bordeaux.
Internationally, he has represented the Albanian national side on 31 occasions.
