2001 - Sunderland make it a fantastic start to the New Year with a 4-1 win over Ipswich at the Stadium Of Light. The goal scorers that day were Julio Arca, Danny Dichio, Kevin Phillips and Stefan Schwarz. This was Sunderland's joint highest score of the season. They also beat Bradford 4-1 at Valley Parade.

2004 - Sunderland took on fellow North East rivals, Hartlepool in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. The game took place at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland won 1-0. A second-half goal from Julio Arca was good enough to help Sunderland on the road to an FA Cup semi-final.

1992 - Sunderland began their FA cup runners-up campaign with a 3-0 victory over Port Vale at Roker Park. The goalscorers that day were: John Byrne, Brian Atkinson and Peter Davenport.

1935 - 15,000 spectators showed up to see Sunderland start their New Year with a 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Roker Park.

1996 - Former Man United trainee, Terry Cooke, made his debut for Sunderland in a home game against Tranmere. Cooke went on to make a total of just six appearances for Sunderland before moving out on loan - and then permanently - to Man City.
