Report: Sheffield United Women 2-3 SAFC Women

Sunderland Women were victorious in their first Continental Tyres League Cup game as they beat Sheffield United at the Impact Arena.

Eight changes were made to the starting eleven that drew 1-1 with Birmingham City Women at the weekend.

Ellie May and Tara Bourne scored for the hosts in the seventh and 32nd minute respectively.

Emily Scarr converted a penalty 30 minutes in, with Mollie Rouse equalising just before half time.

Academy star Mary Corbyn scored the winner in the 66th minute to cap off a successful night on the road.

The Lasses almost took an early lead four minutes in, with Ellen Jones running onto a loose ball and rifling her shot off the crossbar.

Sheffield United took the lead when Ellie May latched onto a back pass and slotted into the corner.

Mel Reay’s side responded well, with chances falling to both Rouse and Amy Goddard within minutes of each other, but neither could be converted.

The Lasses were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute, with Scarr scoring her first of the season to equalise.

Bourne gave the hosts the lead again, meeting Jodie Hutton’s free-kick to head past Megan Borthwick.

On the stroke of half-time, Rouse cut onto her left foot on the edge of the box and fired a shot into the bottom corner, scoring on her first start for the Club.

The Black Cats took the lead in the 65th minute as Corbyn ran onto a loose ball to place a shot into the bottom corner – an amazing moment for the academy star on her first-team debut.

The young star had another opportunity minutes later, with Scarr breaking down the left wing and crossing into the box, but the latter couldn’t get a clean connection on the shot.

The 83rd minute saw Libbi McInnes control the ball in the box, flashing a shot towards goal but the ‘keeper thwarted the chance.

With three points in Group A, the Lasses’ attention now quickly turns back to the league as we host Reading Women at Eppleton on Sunday.
