Women Preview: Conti Cup action against Liverpool

SAFC Women turn their attentions to the Continental Tyres Cup as they host Liverpool Women at Eppleton this Sunday (KO 11:30am).

The last Conti Cup action the Lasses had come against Liverpool in Hetton, as the sides played out a 0-0 draw, with Sunderland winning 4-2 on penalties.

Mel Reay’s side just fell short of qualification from the groups as a win in normal time was needed, but spirits were high after a superb win against strong opposition.

Last time out in the league, the Lasses were narrowly beaten in an eventful 3-2 defeat against Charlton, with Emily Scarr and Emma Kelly scoring for the home side.

Abby Holmes misses the game through a one-match suspension following her dismissal for two bookings last time out – aside from the long-term absentees, everyone is available for selection.

Liverpool - now a Barclays WSL side after promotion from the Championship last season – have won one of their two league games, beating Chelsea on the opening day, but losing out in the Merseyside derby to Everton.

The Merseyside club finished top of the second tier last year with 52 points from 22 games, 11 points clear of London City Lionesses in second.

After advancing through the groups in the Conti Cup last campaign, Matt Beard’s side exited in the first round of the knockouts, losing out to Tottenham in a 1-0 defeat.

Sunday’s game will be streamed live via the Women’s side’s official Twitter account @SAFCWomen, with live updates also on the page. Red & White match day programme is currently not in operation for cup matches this season - any future changes will be communicated on safc.com.
