Report: Sunderland AFC 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Sunderland AFC 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Sunderland AFC suffered a final-day defeat as Sheffield Wednesday confirmed their survival in the Sky Bet Championship.

Liam Palmer opened the scoring with a low-driven effort before Josh Windass' strike sealed three points for the visitors at the Stadium of Light.

Mike Dodds named two changes to his side with Nathan Bishop replacing Anthony Patterson for his first league start of the campaign.

Patrick Roberts returned to the XI and looked to get on the scoresheet in the early proceedings. A left-footed effort from the edge of the area sailing wide.

The offside flag denied the Black Cats an opener moments later. Callum Styles’ in-swinging free-kick was headed home by Luke O’Nien who was deemed to be stood in an offside position.

Sheffield Wednesday took the lead with a third of the afternoon played. Barry Bannan started the move before Palmer found his way inside the box to dispatch past Bishop.

Jack Clarke was denied his 16th goal of the season and the equaliser just before the break. A curling effort struck the woodwork before bouncing out to be cleared.

The second for the Owls came after 38 minutes. Palmer was once again involved taking on Aji Alese before crossing for Windass to apply the finishing touch.

A double change at the break saw Styles and Pat Roberts replaced by Corry Evans and Chris Rigg.

The Club Captain looked to make an instant impact mid-way through the second half, feeding the ball to Clarke who had an effort parried away by James Beadle.

Despite the late pressure from Mike Dodds’ side, the Owls were able to hold on for a final-day victory.
