Preview: Lads head to Middlesbrough

Sunderland are back on the road this weekend as they travel to the Riverside Stadium to face fellow North East outfit Middlesbrough.

Michael Beale will be hoping to record back-to-back Sky Bet Championship wins for the first time following his appointment as Head Coach.

Opposition

Middlesbrough currently sit 11th in the Sky Bet Championship with 40 points from 28 games. Boro have recorded 12 wins, four draws and suffered 12 defeats so far this season.

Michael Carrick’s team have lost just two of their last eight league outings both of which have been on home soil. The former Premier League winner has won 38 of his 72 matches in charge of the North Yorkshire club.

Emmanuel Latte Lath is one to watch in front of goal having notched seven times this campaign.

Sam Greenwood will come up against his former employer having spent several years in the Black Cats’ academy before departing for Arsenal in 2018. The 22-year-old played 18 times, scoring six goals for Sunderland Under-18s.

The last two outings between the sides have seen two game-changing red cards, Dan Neil, and Dael Fry both receiving their marching orders on either side of the interval when the game remained goalless.

Team News

Michael Beale has confirmed new signings Romaine Mundle and Leo Hjelde are available to make their league debuts against Middlesbrough. However, fellow arrival Callum Styles is unavailable following appendix surgery.

Patrick Roberts could return to Sunderland’s matchday squad after returning to full training this week, but the match comes too soon for Elliot Embleton.

Nectar Triantis, Eliezer Mayenda and Jay Matete have all departed the club on loan for the remainder of the season.
