Interview: Gibson demands focus

Darron Gibson believes good form in Sunderland’s next batch of fixtures will be essential to heaping pressure on other teams as the race of Premier League survival heats up.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder has also warned his team-mates against worrying about what other teams around them are doing, insisting sole focus on the Black Cats’ own push is vital.

With Sean Dyche’s Burnley up next at the Stadium of Light for the Lads, David Moyes’ side will be hoping to inflict the same disappointment on the Claret’s as Swansea City did last Saturday.

But while the Swans earned a huge three points in the race for safety, Gibson, 29, has admitted anything can happen as the pressure mounts week by week.

“There’s a good team spirit in the dressing room and a great attitude,” he admitted.

“I didn’t think the spirit would be as good as it is but the spirits are high and hopefully now after that trip away we can kick on and get some results.

“We’ve been in worse positions and done it sand it’s still very tight at the bottom of the league.

“Anything can happen and if we get a few wins then pressure will be massively on the other teams.”

He added: “We’ve just got to worry about ourselves.”
