Red and white army: Zenden pays tribute to Sunderland's fans

Bolo Zenden has paid homage to Sunderland’s fans, admitting they are what make the club tick.

The 40-year-old is remembered fondly by Black Cats fans after he spent two-years on Wearside before he called time on an illustrious playing career.

Zenden came to the Stadium of Light while the team were under the stewardship of Steve Bruce and helped the lads record a 10th place finish in the Premier League in his final year.

The former Dutch international brought a certain swagger to the Black Cats’ game as he dazzled fans with a speculative volley against Tuesday’s opponents Tottenham Hotspur in Sunderland’s last victory over the north London side as well as displayed his dance moves when Asamoah Gyan celebrated a surprise victory at Chelsea in November 2010.

Speaking to safc.com, Zenden reflected on his Wearside experience and highlighted the value of the red and white army in making his time at Sunderland special.

“I had a great time and I did enjoy it because for me I enjoyed playing the most,” he said.

“As soon as you are not involved it’s sometimes hard to take. I was actually pleased to play my last game away at West Ham, win it 3-0 and score a goal.

“That took us to 10th and was probably the best thing out of my time at Sunderland.

“During my time their we had a spell when it was tough and players moved on but that’s part and part of the industry.

“For the people living there and supporting the club though they all want to support the team in the Premier League because that’s the highest league possible,” he continued.

“They want to enjoy their football and come to Premier League games so of course the players need to know what they are fighting for - not just their own sake but for the people in the area and the people of the club.”
