Talking points: Managers reflect on draw

David Moyes and Sean Dyche share their thoughts on the big talking points from Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie at the Stadium of Light.

Overall thoughts

Moyes: “I didn't think we played well. I thought we were better in the first half, there were bit of play, but we never really got started in the second half really. Defensively we kept a clean sheet, but I was disappointed we gave Burnley a few opportunities."

Dyche: “It was a good spectacle from my point of view because I felt we gave a good performance. We’d had the two big games in three days and others who have been carrying minor knocks, so we thought this was an opportunity - not by any standards to take this lightly – to make sure that everyone, as a collective, gets a chance to play.”

Turf Moor replay

Moyes: “With 10 to 15 minutes to go they were the better team and looked like they were going to score. So with 10 to go would I have taken the draw? Yes. I'd rather have won the tie today but I'd rather have a replay than be out of the cup.”

Dyche: “I’m not bothered about having another fixture to play. We’ve just come out of the Championship where you are constantly playing. In the Premier League we do have some breaks and generally it’s week to week, rather than Saturday/Tuesday/Saturday. I don’t remember us crying it in. When a game comes along, we take on the challenge and see what comes.”

Squad rotation

Moyes: “It was easy [to pick Jermain] because I want to get through. If I didn’t [pick him] people would have said ‘why didn’t you play him?’ There was a lot of talk about playing young players, if needed we will, but if not then I don’t need to. I just told him he was playing and we got on with it.”

Dyche: “It’s vital that with our strength of depth, and in terms of fitness and mentality, that players know they can come into the side and still be productive and there were good signs of that. I felt they (Sunderland) went with what looks like the strongest side they could get out today and I was pleased that our players competed well against the opposition.”

Limited chances

Moyes: “I thought we played better and had a few decent bits of play in the first half, but overall I didn’t think we got started in the second half. We tried as much as we could to alter it with what we have. It was a poor game, and even at Burnley it was a poor game. The difference was that we conceded terrible goals there. Today it was a poor game, but we just didn’t concede any goals. It was very similar.”

Dyche: “These are tight games, but I felt we did enough to win it because we had two or three great chances at the end and Tarky’s header takes a nick before it hits the post. We had enough golden chances though over the game and we usually take them. We had a really strong hold on the game, particularly in the last 15 minutes, so I’m pleased with the fitness and some of the play, so other than the result, I was pleased with the group today.”
