Red and white army: Rodwell salutes outstanding fans

Jack Rodwell has labelled Sunderland’s fans ‘the best in the league’ as they prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur tonight, KO 7.45pm.

With results going against the Black Cats in the last few weeks, David Moyes will be hopeful of ending January on a high ahead of Saturday’s trip to the capital.

However, standing in their way of doing so are Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs team who have lost just two Premier League matches all season - the fewest of any top-flight side.

But Rodwell, 25, has highlighted Sunderland’s form at the Stadium of Light, admitting the red and white army can roar the lads over the line and play a major part in helping them maintain their record of just two defeats on home soil since October.

“Spur are a great side to watch for the neutral because they are a young and they have a lot of English players doing well,” he said.

“We have got to think about ourselves and try to prevent them from doing what they do, hopefully we can do that.

“When the fans are on it they are the best fans in the league so it’s important we get them behind us right from the start and hopefully we can give them something to cheer about.

“Our home form hasn’t been bad but when I look back some of the performances they haven’t been great.

“That said, we have managed to get results at home so we have got to cling onto that and hopefully get another good result,” he continued.

“If we can get the fans on side early on then it just gives you a lift, like the Liverpool match.

“We felt like we had that extra man and it showed in the result as well so hopefully we can start the game well and grind something out.”
