Fighting talk: Mannone targets Burnley response

Vito Mannone believes victory over Burnley in the Emirates FA Cup can set a timely example heading into the second half of the 2016-17 season.

The Black Cats will be aiming to build on a credible draw against Liverpool when the Clarets come to town, but it won’t be easy and David Moyes’ side know that all too well having suffered a 4-1 defeat at Turf Moor under one week ago.

Following Saturday’s cup action, Sunderland will refocus their attention to the PL with Mark Hughes' Stoke City arriving at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 14 January.

But, at least for the time being, Mannone revealed the Lads’ focus will be on cup progression and building on that all-important momentum.

“It was a great point and a real battle,” said Mannone following his return to action.

“The fans deserved a better game and we gave one; they got behind us and we stuck two penalties away through Jermain who was as cool as ever.”

He continued: “For me [the game against Burnley was difficult] because it was my first game for three or four months due to injury.

“Today we responded really well and we fought for each other which is exactly what we need to do.

“We can’t do it against the big clubs and then not against the clubs in and round us, but if we do it, starting this weekend against Burnley, we have a chance and they beat us too easy on New Year’s Eve.

“We have to keep fighting for each other because the crowd will get behind us and we’ll get the results to stay up.”
