Winning momentum: Defoe targets cup boost

Sunderland have set the bar following a thrilling comeback against Liverpool, according to Jermain Defoe.

The Black Cats struck back on multiple occasions against the Reds to cancel out goals from Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane, with Defoe keeping his cool from the spot to net two vital penalties.

On Saturday David Moyes’ side will face Burnley for the second time in a week, this time in the Emirates FA Cup, with the Clarets sealing a 4-1 win at Turf Moor on New Year’s Eve.

And Defoe admits the Black Cats have a point to prove when Sean Dyche’s side arrive on Wearside.

“We’ll bring them here and like you said we owe them one.

“It’s a cup game and we always want to do well in the cups – we’ve got a few injuries so I’m not sure what the manager is going to do – but we want to win games because it’s good for the confidence within the squad.”

He continued: “We can’t approach it lightly and we want to win, especially with the game being at home.

“I think if you work hard and give everything but then lose the game you can hold your hands up and say ‘fair enough’, but if don’t do that it’s unacceptable.

“The manager wanted a reaction and he definitely got that against Liverpool.”
