Match preview: Everton v Sunderland

Sunderland return to action on Saturday when they take on Everton at Goodison Park (KO 3pm).

The Black Cats are itching to set the record straight and return to winning ways, with their last outing ending in a disappointing defeat at home to Southampton as Manolo Gabbiadini announced his Premier League arrival.

Spirits remain high, though, with the Lads focussed on adding to the foundations built at Crystal Palace just a few weeks ago, with a team bonding trip also fuelling positivity within the group.

Everton are also flying high and enter the game refreshed having travelled to Dubai last week, with Ronald Koeman’s side striving to close the gap on the top six.

The game marks David Moyes’ second return to Goodison Park since departing to take charge of Manchester United in 2013.

And the Sunderland boss isn’t the only familiar face returning to Merseyside, with Joleon Lescott, Bryan Oviedo, Darron Gibson, Jack Rodwell and Victor Anichebe all donning the royal blue prior to their moves to Wearside.

Rodwell and Anichebe won’t feature, however, with the duo continuing to recovery from injuries.

Likewise, Lee Cattermole, Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore remain sidelined, but Moyes did provide an update on Cattermole during his pre-match press conference after the midfielder suffered a minor setback.

Jan Kirchhoff has returned to training but won’t feature as he continues to build his fitness, with Papy Djilobodji serving the final game of a four-match ban.

Jordan Pickford could return between the posts after returning to training, with Moyes admitting he has a decision to make following Vito Mannone’s return to the fold.

Everton, meanwhile, have been handed a huge boost with Romelu Lukaku, who scored a hat-trick at the Stadium of Light earlier this season, passed fit.

The Belgium international has been in scintillating form during the current campaign, netting a total of 22 goals in just 29 appearances for club and country.

James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas could also return to action.

Sunderland have won on two of their last three trips to Goodison Park – can they make it three out of four?
