Pundits plaudits: Wright hails 'fantastic' Sunderland

Ian Wright waxed Wearside lyrical on BBC Match of the Day following Sunderland’s 4-0 demolition of Crystal Palace.

The former England international hailed the ‘fantastic’ Black Cats as goals from Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong set the standard before Jermain Defoe took centre stage.

Wright, who scored over 100 goals for the Eagles, played with Defoe during his time at West Ham United with the Black Cat often hailing the impact and mentorship offered by the Arsenal legend.

And the BBC pundit heaped praise on the Sunderland striker and his team-mates during his analysis of the game.

“Sunderland have got to get a lot of credit because they were under a lot of pressure coming into the game,” concluded Wright.

“Januzaj played very well – his pass for the fourth was brilliant – and Jermain has done what he does but if you give him that time in the box he hits the target and scores.”

He continued: “Sam probably thought it was going to be a good day, dancing with the mascot, but that’s about where it ended in respects to smiles.

“It was a set piece [the opener] and Kone, who was magnificent, was too strong and his reactions to get it on target and volley it in from there was fantastic.

“The keeper wasn’t set and I don’t think he moves his feet well enough [for the second], but it’s a good strike and Sunderland were really flying and playing brilliantly.”

But Wright’s fellow pundit, Alan Shearer, probably summed it up best.

“Sunderland were absolutely brilliant.”
