Interview: Watmore targets response

Duncan Watmore has urged his team-mates to build on the positives and improve following a 3-0 defeat to Everton at the Stadium of Light.

An encouraging first-half display was a distant memory as the full-time whistle echoed around Wearside, with Romelu Lukaku’s 11-minute hat-trick sending Ronald Koeman’s side into the top three.

Sunderland, meanwhile, were left to wonder what might as their wait for a first Premier League win continued, but post-match Watmore refused to be downbeat and instead switched his attention to Sunday’s trip to White Hart Lane.

“Everyone is taking responsibility; it is just frustrating because you cannot defend like that.

“We know that and we know we can do better and that is what we want to do next week – put in a much better performance.”

He added: “It is a learning curve, but we need to do it quickly.

“We needed to start well, we need more points and we will try to do that starting with Tottenham.

“We need to stay positive.”
