Team news: Catts in contention

Lee Cattermole and Steven Pienaar could feature when Sunderland face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The duo have returned to training ahead of the trip to White Hart Lane with the Black Cats’ early-season injury woes starting to ease.

Jason Denayer and Didier Ndong are also in contention after making their debuts against Everton on Monday evening, but Victor Anichebe willnot be risked as he nurses a slight thigh strain.

“Lee Cattermole and Steven Pienaar have got a chance of being involved,” confirmed Moyes. “They have both trained for the last few days and they are beginning to push a little bit more to join the group.

“It would be good to get Victor ready but I don’t want to rush him; he has a little bit of a thigh strain but he’s stilling running so we’re just being protective.”

He added: “They [Denayer and Ndong] are both in and around it and they will both play a lot of games this year.

“We need to give them a chance to bed in and we don’t want to be putting in new players all the time, but they are here to be part of the squad and they came on the other night and got some minutes which will help.”

Moyes also challenged Lamine Kone to build on a promising start to his Sunderland career after signing a new five-year deal on Wearside.

“We’re really pleased to have Lamine and he’s an important player who did very well for Sunderland during his first six months.

“We’ve rewarded him with a new contract and we’re looking for big performances from him now because he’s now at the level where we expect him to be a key player in every game.”
