Team news : Trio in contention

Jack Rodwell, Jermain Defoe and Wahbi Khazri could feature when Sunderland host Crystal Palace on Saturday in the Premier League.

David Moyes has been without Rodwell for the last two games while Defoe and Khazri weren’t included in the squad that travelled to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon Moyes confirmed that the trio could return to the squad, and admitted Victor Anichebe isn’t far away from featuring for the first time.

“We have just started to get some of the seniors back but we are still waiting on Fabio Borini to come back,” he said.

“We will get Jack Rodwell back for this game after he missed the last couple so we are getting much closer to having full contingent in our squad now.

“Jermain is back in training and we hope he will be fit and ready to go tomorrow.

“Wahbi had a sickness bug but has come back and trained a couple of days so hopefully he will be available for the squad as well.”

He continued: “We hope to see Victor soon because he has got Premier League experience and we are short of strikers as we showed a little bit in midweek with our cup game.

“Overall we need him because he is a Premier League player and he can bring some experience, but we are trying to get him in the right condition.

“I would like him to get some minutes in games but we have been like that since the start of the season. We have been able to give Victor some training so he isn’t too far away.”
