View from the opposition: Pochettino on Sunderland

Mauricio Pochettino has demanded a response from his players against Sunderland following a midweek defeat to Monaco at Wembley Stadium.

Spurs found themselves 2-0 down after just 31 minutes but they pulled one back through Toby Alderweireld on the stroke of half-time, however, they were unable to find an equaliser as their first UEFA Champions League outing since 2011 ended in defeat.

In a stark contrast, Tottenham eased past Stoke City last weekend with an attacking masterclass putting Mark Hughes’ side to the sword as a Son Heung-Min’s double helped secure a 4-0 win.

And speaking to at his pre-match press conference, Pochettino challenged his side to bounce back and add consistency to their performances and results.

“To show more consistency in our behaviour is very important for our future. It’s early in the season but we need to compete much, much better.

““When we wait six years, a long time to play Champions League, after 45 minutes you can’t go to the changing room with this feeling.

“We need to learn from that, to be more aggressive and to play more in the way that we usually play

“We were the problem and we need to be very critical with ourselves.

"It'll be a tough game [against Sunderland]," Pochettino continued. "It's the Premier League and it demands a lot of energy like the Champions League.

"It's true that after Wednesday I am thinking about rotating the team a bit, the starting XI.

“We'll see what happens tomorrow [Saturday] when we assess all the players and take the best decision for the team.”
