Preview: Sunderland v Everton

Sunderland return to Premier League action on Monday evening hosting Everton at the Stadium of Light (KO 8pm).

Last season’s Stadium of Light showdown between the teams yielded unparalleled joy for those in red and white, with Patrick van Aanholt’s free-kick and Lamine Kone’s double securing a 3-0 win and Premier League survival.

The result sparked the end of Roberto Martinez’s tenure at Goodison Park with the Spaniard departing following the end of the season, with former Southampton boss Ronald Koeman swapping the south coast for Merseyside.

And the Toffees will travel to Wearside transformed under the Dutchman who has guided them to an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are still searching for that elusive first win in the Premier League, but the international break came at a good time for David Moyes’ side whose injury concerns have somewhat softened due to players returning and new signings arriving.

Earlier this week Jason Denayer and Jan Kirchhoff both featured for the first time this season, with the former making his debut and the latter returning from a hamstring injury.

Lee Cattermole has also returned to training but the Black Cats will once again be without Vito Mannone (elbow), Seb Larsson (knee) and Fabio Borini.

Sunderland boss Moyes also revealed that he doesn’t expect new signing Victor Anichebe to feature with the striker currently working towards peak fitness.

James McCarthy, Tom Cleverley, Darren Gibson and Muhamed Besic are currently out for the visitors, but Seamus Coleman could make his first domestic appearance of the season.

Please note that cash turnstiles will not be in operation for Monday’s game – further ticket information is available by clicking here.
