Preview: Defoe on Tottenham

Jermain Defoe has left White Hart Lane with a smile on his face on countless occasions, and he wants to do exactly that when Sunderland travel to the capital on Sunday afternoon.

The Black Cats head to London in search of their first Premier League win of the season but it won’t be easy against a Tottenham Hotspur side who notched an emphatic 4-0 win over Stoke City last weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side did however suffer defeat last time out in the UEFA Champions League, and Defoe urged his team-mates to exploit any fatigue within the Spurs ranks.

“It will be nice to go back but my mind will be on getting three points and leaving White Hart Lane happy,” said Defoe. “For us it’s a massive game because we need to get our season going, we need the points and we need to get our first league win.

“It’s going to be difficult but I watched Spurs on Wednesday and they’ve not reached the levels they were at last year, but its till early days and it’s the same with us so hopefully we can go there and be disciplined.”

He added: “As I said they played on Wednesday so maybe fatigue will kick in at the end of the game so we will just see what happens.”

Defoe also hailed the return of talismanic midfielder Lee Cattermole who could feature at White Hart Lane according to manager David Moyes.

“You can’t buy the experience that people like Catts bring to the team [so it’s important to have them back] and he’s played in the Premier League for 10 years so he brings a lot to the team.

“Jan is also back and he came from Bayern Munich so he’s a top player and you need that experience.”
